Steel frame erection underway at IMH site at University of Nottingham

imh Nottingham

The Deltabeam and steel frame erection, which is expected to be completed by the end of July, are now well underway on the IMH site at the University of Nottingham’s Jubilee campus.

Waldeck was appointed to work on a circa £7 million project to construct a permanent home for the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

Waldeck, which has eight offices throughout the east of England and South Yorkshire, including one on Clarendon Street in Nottingham, is working on the project alongside international architecture firm Benoy.

The four-storey building on the University of Nottingham’s Jubilee Campus will incorporate a mixture of office and teaching space, bringing all IMH staff groups together.

It is expected that the building, which is being funded by the University of Nottingham, will be complete by April 2012.

EDF Power Station, Nottinghamshire

Waldeck won the prestigious contract to provide design support services for EDF Energy’s new £600 million combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) station at West Burton, Nottinghamshire.

The highly efficient power station is the first to be constructed in the UK by EDF Energy, and is due to be ready for commercial operation in 2011. The 1,300MW station is being developed in line with EDF Energy’s mission to improve power station efficiency and it is claimed to make a ‘significant contribution’ to meeting the UK’s future energy demand while helping to cut carbon dioxide emissions.

Waldeck will work alongside appointed construction company Kier to provide design support services for EDF Energy. In all, the development is likely to employ a construction workforce of more than 1,000 at its peak, providing a welcome boost for British building firms.

Innovation

Working with an overseas client whose approach to design and construction is very different has proven to be an enjoyable, challenging and innovative relationship. By immersing ourselves within the client’s own culture we have assisted EDF in designing and constructing their first new power station in the UK. On a daily basis our site-based support teams work shoulder to shoulder in converting the technology and its application. We are unique in that we are the only UK designers to work directly with the French to deliver their first new build power station in the UK and as a result enjoy a fantastic working relationship built on trust, commitment, an ability to do what we say we will do.

New home for Institute of Mental Health in Nottingham

Nottingham Institute of Mental Health

Waldeck in Nottingham has been appointed to work on a circa £7 million project to construct a permanent home for the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

It is hoped the building, which is being funded by the University of Nottingham, will be complete by April 2012.

BREEAM Excellent rated
Waldeck is responsible for the design and detailing of the structural and civil engineering element of the scheme which includes the steel framework, foundations, drainage and rainwater attenuation systems.

Associate Director Dan Wright explained: “This will certainly be a visually striking building. The team at Benoy have incorporated glazed terracotta panels into the design to provide continuity with the surrounding architecture.

“The state-of-the-art facility will incorporate the TermoDeck® flooring system which uses the thermal storage capacity of the building’s structural mass to regulate the internal temperatures and will be BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) Excellent rated.

“This project has given us one or two challenges,” added Dan, “owing to the high levels of glazing and the use of SIPS panels to the building elevations and in designing the razor-edged roof profile.

“It is also one of potentially four buildings currently that could be constructed on the campus in close proximity to one another which will require a lot of careful construction planning.”

Work to commence in May
Richard Wigginton, Capital Projects Officer, from the University of Nottingham added: “We are pleased to be working with Waldeck and Benoy on this very exciting project.

“The commitment to the construction of the bespoke new accommodation signals the strength of partnership between the University of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust as the co-founders of the Institute of Mental Health.”

The new building will also house the CLAHRC-NDL (Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care – Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire), the Mental Health Research Network East Midlands Hub plus South Yorkshire, and the East Midlands Leadership Academy.

Work on site is expected to commence in May 2011.

Waldeck showcases success at Nottingham event

Waldeck, one of the region’s leading creative engineering consultancies, is continuing to broaden both its clientele and profile throughout the East Midlands.

The dynamic firm has just exhibited at one of the region’s most successful property and investment shows in an attempt to secure yet more business within the area.

The East Midlands Property & Business Investment Show in Nottingham attracts decision- makers from a wide variety of property investment businesses with an interest in the economic regeneration of the region.

This was the first time Waldeck had exhibited at the event, which took place at the East Midlands Conference Centre on Friday 5th November, and the company was keen to impress the delegates.

The multi-disciplinary firm, which opened its Nottingham office in spring 2010, now has six offices in the region, making Waldeck one of the fastest growing engineering firms in the UK.

Associate Director Dan Wright explained why exhibiting was such a priority for them this year.

“Nottingham is a particularly important area for us to expand in as it enables us to compete for business throughout the East Midlands as well as along the M1 corridor,” he said.

“So when the opportunity to exhibit at this year’s show arose we jumped at the chance. We were delighted with the response we received at the show. This was the perfect opportunity to showcase our work and engage with potential new clients for the future.

” Since launching our new office in Nottingham five months ago we have continued to forge ahead with business development in the East Midlands with encouraging results.

“In a climate where many companies are struggling I am delighted to report that Waldeck is continuing to expand.”

Waldeck supports charity dinner

Waldeck helped to raise over £19,000 by attending a charity dinner at MemSaab Restaurant in Nottingham hosted by twice Michelin starred celebrity chef Atul Kochhar.

Held on Sunday 26th September it was one of a number of events organised as part of the Nottingham Food and Drink Festival which attracted around 25,000 visitors.

Since taking over MemSaab Restaurant in 2005 Naj Aziz has held an annual charity dinner in aid of a number of national organisations and appeals such as The Prince’s Trust and the Kashmiri Earthquake Appeal.

Local causes

As a Nottingham business owner however Naj is also keen to support the local community and for the past two years he’s donated some of the money raised to good causes closer to home.

This year Naj and the team at MemSaab Restaurant managed to raise an amazing £18,276 for three charities: Kenya Children Centres, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People and Cerebral Palsy Sport.

A further £1,134 was collected for Pakistan Flood Relief.

The evening started with canapés and champagne followed by a four-course meal with entertainment provided by a jazz swing band and the Dancing Nakita Company.

There was also an auction with lots including dinner, bed and breakfast for two at Hambleton Hall, four Executive Suite tickets for the Simply Red Farewell Tour at the Trent FM Arena and a case of Krug Grande Cuvée champagne.

Clarendon Street

In June, Waldeck opened their sixth office on Clarendon Street in central Nottingham, following the continued growth of the business over the last twelve months.

Associate Director Dan Wright, said: “We were delighted to take a party of eight guests to the MemSaab Restaurant Charity Dinner and to be able to support so many worthwhile charities, whilst enjoying a fabulous night of food and entertainment.

“I would like to congratulate Naj on organising such a successful event and look forward to next year’s charity dinner when we are sure that he will host another great evening and raise even more money for charity.
