This project was a fit out of an existing tired sports hall with a new mezzanine floor , a ‘life skills’ room, an activity space, a classroom and offices at ground floor.

It is a socially important project as it is to be used for children aged between 10 and 19 with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and could also potentially be used for public use.

Waldeck devised a way of integrating the mezzanine into the existing structure, without any excessive influence onto the existing foundations. This meant both time and expenditure savings on requirements usually necessary, such as underpinning or additional deep foundations, which you would normally associate when building alongside existing structures.

Waldeck worked alongside GSSArchitecture, “GSS were professional, and protected the schools interests from start to completion and it was a pleasure to work with them”, Andrew Dent, Director for Waldeck commented.

Waldeck is expanding its operations in the Midlands by opening a new office in Birmingham and exhibiting at Foodex 2012 – one of the UK’s biggest shows for food processing, packaging and logistics.

The new office on Newhall Street in the city will enable Waldeck to expand its operations into the West Midlands.

Creating local jobs

Managing Director Fraser Mercer explained: “We already have nine offices in cities across the UK including Nottingham, Lincoln, Sleaford and Northampton and we’ve also recently opened a new office in Birmingham which will enable us to increase our geographical reach to encompass the whole of the Midlands.

“As our presence in the city grows then inevitably it will create local employment opportunities so it’s good news for Waldeck and the city.”

In March Waldeck was one of over 1,200 exhibitors at Foodex, the leading exhibition for anyone working in the UK food and drink manufacturing industry, at the NEC in Birmingham.

Specialist food division

For the first time Foodex was held in conjunction with the Food & Drink Expo and the National Convenience Show – allowing Waldeck to promote its expertise and services to a wider audience.

Director Andrew Dent, who also heads up the firm’s specialist food division, said: “Although we’re a multi-disciplinary consultant engineering firm our focus for this event was on promoting our expertise in the processing and storage and logistics sectors to producers and distributors who are looking to renovate their current premises or build new facilities. It was our first time at the show and we were really impressed.

“The key to Waldeck’s success in the food industry is the company’s understanding of key industry issues including adaptation to changes in customer, goods, types of product handled and technology; production of high-quality, clean and sterile environments; energy usage; and safety and environmental risk management.”

Waldeck was one of over 1,500 exhibitors at this year’s Ecobuild – the world’s biggest exhibition for sustainable design, construction and the built environment.

The three-day event (20th to 22nd March 2012) at ExCel London attracted over 60,000 visitors making it the biggest Ecobuild yet.

It’s the second time that Waldeck has exhibited at Ecobuild and follows the launch of the Waldeck London office in 2011.

Emerging markets
Fraser Mercer, Managing Director, said: “Ecobuild 2012 was another huge success for Waldeck and enabled us to promote our services to potential clients as well as meet potential suppliers where we can endorse their product. This is particularly useful since winning the Builder & Engineer Consulting Engineer of the Year Award 2011.

“Although we are a multi-disciplinary consulting engineering firm our focus for this year’s show was to raise the profile of our Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Division, promote our precast concrete services and highlight our specialist expertise and proven track record as specialist sustainable design consultants.”

Fraser continued: “Our stand, which was part of the British Precast pavilion, attracted a lot of visitors from the UK and other European countries including Holland and Belgium. We also had some interesting discussions regarding the emerging markets, in particular Brazil, which is now the sixth largest economy in the world and has huge potential for developments around the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ and Rio 2016™.”

The Green Register
Waldeck is a market leader in sustainable design and one of only a handful of UK civil and structural engineering firms to be qualified and listed on The Green Register of Construction Professionals.

According to Fraser, sustainability is of increasing importance to the construction industry which is why exhibitions such as Ecobuild are so well attended.

“The Building Regulations are constantly being amended and developers need to be certain they are up to date with the latest legislation and advances in technology,” he explained.

“As well as being a great place to network, Ecobuild offers inspiration and practical advice on how to champion sustainability whilst remaining profitable during a period of low economic growth.”

“Our team of specialist engineers has a vast amount of experience approaching a combined total of almost 300 years in precast alone, and Waldeck is one of only a handful of consultants which is affiliated to British Precast – the UK’s trade organisation – and sits on the Structural Precast Association Technical Committee.”

Waldeck is a market leader in sustainable design and renewable energy and is one of the few UK civil and structural engineering firms to be qualified and listed on The Green Register of Construction Professionals.

Waldeck Engineering has been appointed to design and detail three pre-cast concrete plinths which will form part of a memorial commemorating those who died in the Bethnal Green disaster on 3rd March 1943.

The tragedy, which took place in the stairwell of Bethnal Green tube station in London, was the worst civilian disaster of World War II. 300 people were crushed into the stairwell within a few seconds, 173 of them died and over 90 were injured.

As part of the memorial plinth’s design process, Waldeck’s team of structural engineers is using the latest Tekla Structures Building Information Modelling (BIM) software to create detailed 3D models of the pre-cast concrete elements.

These models allow the Waldeck team to interrogate the design and eliminate any problems at an early stage, thereby reducing design and fabrication errors.

The 3D model also enables the manufacturer, Aggregate Industries, to produce a precise mould.

Waldeck Director John Holroyd said this is particularly useful when working on a project of this nature.

“The Bethnal Green Memorial is a challenging project because of the unusual shape of the design,” said John.

“The plinths have sloping planes and there are no straight angles, which is where the Tekla Structures software comes into its own.

“Using 3D finite element analysis and detailing software, our engineers can produce extremely economical specifications and accurate drawings and deal with irregular structural configurations more efficiently.”

One of the three polished concrete plinths designed by Arboreal Architecture acts as a support arm for a hollowed out laminated teak stairway; this echoes the entrance stairway to the tube station directly below and accurately depicts the volume of space in which people died.

Project Engineers The Morton Partnership have designed the foundations, connection to precast support arm and the timber stairway.

A series of bronze plaques will be mounted on the two lower plinths, which will rise out of the ground with defined spaces where people can lay flowers and wreaths.

Work on the first phase of the project, which includes the construction of the plinths, started on site on 23rd February 2012 and will take approximately three months to complete.

About Bethnal Green Memorial

Planning permission has been granted for a memorial in the form of a precast concrete support arm and teak stairway with 173 light cones in the roof, representing those who died, designed by local architects Arboreal Architecture.

The largest of the three plinths weighs 10 tonnes and measures 7.5 metres high and 1 metre wide.

The Stairway to Heaven Memorial Trust was established in 2007 to create a memorial to those who died in the disaster.

The trust has raised £256,000 for the first phase of the project which includes the groundwork, landscaping, benches, plaques and the pre-cast concrete plinths.

The trust is currently in the process of raising the £150,000 in funds necessary for the completion of the project’s second stage. For more information or to make a donation online please visit www.stairwaytoheavenmemorial.org

Waldeck will be exhibiting at one of the UK’s biggest shows for food processing, packaging and logistics in March.

Foodex is the leading exhibition for anyone working in the UK food and drink manufacturing industry and takes place at the NEC in Birmingham from 25th to 27th March 2012.

Andrew Dent, Head of the Waldeck specialist food division, said: “The food sector, including process, manufacture and logistics, represents a large part of our existing client base.

“This exhibition, which is expected to attract over 1,200 exhibitors and over 40,000 visitors over three days, is a chance for us to promote our expertise and explain how our services could be of benefit to food producers and distributors wanting to either refurbish their premises or construct new facilities.

“Waldeck has worked with many of the major players in the food and logistics industries and has been involved in projects ranging from small remodelling refurbishments through to major new build facilities throughout the UK and Europe.”

The key to Waldeck’s success in the food industry is the company’s understanding of key industry issues including adaptation to changes in customer, goods, types of product handled and technology; production of high-quality, clean and sterile environments; energy usage; and safety and environmental risk management.

Waldeck operates across the UK and is currently working on a £210 million customer fulfilment centre in Dordon, North Warwickshire for Ocado Group PLC and a £4.6 million distribution centre in Dicot, Oxfordshire for Booker Group PLC.
