Art, science & technology

Our forward-thinking and talented staff, combined with the latest technological advances, have time and time again been a part of some of the most commercial and successful schemes in the market place.

Engineering has been  defined as “the application of science and technology in a clever way to plan, design or construct buildings, engines, cars, and machines”  but the best engineering is both an art and a science. We believe at Waldeck that our people, our experience and expertise is such that the art part of this statement lies within our creative ideas, innovation and invention.

The science element of this definition for us at Waldeck is that we always ensure we use the latest available technology and the best tools for the job to enable us to drill down into those creative ideas scientifically. We then tune our solutions through analysis and finally have them communicated through the most appropriate media so that we specify the most efficient and clearly understandable answer.

We have made significant investments in Finite Element Software for analysing structures so that we can generate an efficiency level beyond the usual, more common industry packages.

We have also written our own in-house software for special situations and new product developments.

Whilst few but the very largest international firms employ it, we perceive that one of the key components for future  efficiency gains and quality recognition for the construction industry lies in BIM (Building Information Modelling). Using BIM software enables the creation and management of accurately detailed, highly constructable 3D  models, regardless of material or structural complexity.

The models can be used to cover the entire building process from conceptual design to fabrication, erection, fit-out, services installation and interface into construction management to make it actually a 6D solution.

3D structural modelling using finite element analysis and drawing capability allied to BIM allows more aesthetically pleasing, structurally challenging yet extremely economically viable designs.

When needed, using interactive drawing formats and video erection sequences, the Waldeck team can tailor their design to contractors’ construction programmes or visa versa, the delivery team can assess scientifically the key design implications for a given series of programme alternatives. Automatic referencing and clash-checking ensures an efficient, economic and effective project of high quality.

Beyond structures, we also use 3D design and drawing applications for substructures, ground modelling for cut and fill, drainage and services networks.

Whether it be 6D, 3D or 2D, or whatever piece of kit, no matter how seriously powerful it is, you still need to have the people of the right character who know what they are doing. Better still, if they are artisans too it creates a potent combination!

  • “Waldeck has undertaken full civil and structural duties for us on various housing developments throughout the Midlands.“We always find their staff responsive to our requirements and easy to communicate with and they understand our high-quality standards and ensure we achieve our objectives.”
