Waldeck wins prime retail contract

Primark Queensgate

Leading European real estate investment and development company Hammerson Plc has appointed Waldeck to work on an £11 million extension to the Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough.

The extension will house retail giant Primark’s new store which at 60,000 ft² will be one of the largest units in the centre.

Several existing retail units are being remodelled to form one large unit over two trading floors and Waldeck has been appointed by Hammerson to undertake the civil and structural engineering work on the project from the feasibility through to the detailed design stage.

Dream team

Established in 1995, Waldeck now has nine offices throughout the UK in Sleaford, Lincoln, Grimsby, Nottingham, Hull, Sheffield, Northampton, London and Peterborough.

Director Paul Housego, who is based at the firm’s office on Priestgate in Peterborough, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Hammerson on the extension which will make the Queensgate Shopping Centre one of the largest in the UK.

“Waldeck has years of experience in creating cost-effective, innovative designs and has successfully completed a number of large engineering projects on time and on budget.

“This latest contract win reflects Waldeck’s strategy of increasing our presence in the retail sector and follows on from our appointment by leading online grocer Ocado Group Plc to provide civil and structural engineering services for a new £210m distribution centre in Dordon, North Warwickshire.”

The natural choice

The construction work on the Queensgate Shopping Centre extension, which is valued at £6 million, is scheduled to be complete by July 2012. The new Primark store will open its doors to the public in November 2012.

Hammerson’s Senior Project Manager Neil Crawford said: “We are really excited to be bringing Primark to both Queensgate Shopping Centre and Peterborough city centre.

“Drawing on their inherent knowledge of the shopping centre, coupled with the first-rate service they provide, Waldeck was the natural choice as engineers for this large and complex cut and carve project.”
