Sleaford teenager undertakes Peruvian adventure

Posted on November 3rd, 2010 by admin

An adventurous Sleaford teenager has completed an expedition to Peru in South America with help from Waldeck.

Rebecca Philips travelled to Peru with schools expedition company World Challenge and had to raise £3,800 to cover the cost of the trip.

Thanks to sponsorship from Waldeck and fund-raising events such as a quiz, dinner party and an RAF concert Rebecca managed to meet her fund-raising target.

Medical centre

As well as taking in the sights Rebecca and the other members of her expedition group spent a week in the small mountain village of Chillipahu.

“The village had about 200 inhabitants whose houses were spread around the mountains,” explained Rebecca.

“We spent the week helping the locals make bricks, transporting soil and building the walls of a new medical centre. The brick-making was my favourite part. Because they didn’t have a cement mixer that far up in the mountains we had to make the brick out of mud and straw using our feet to mix it all up. It was so much fun – like being five again when you could get as muddy as you wanted!

“While we were in Chillipahua we also visited some of the people’s houses. It was quite a shock to see their kitchens which had no windows and guinea pigs running around on the floor!”

Life-changing

On the last day of their stay in the mountain village the locals cooked up a feast of guinea pig and mutton to reward the group for all their hard work.

Commenting on her experience Rebecca said: “The expedition really was a trip of a lifetime. I have seen some of the most amazing sights such as Machu Picchu, which really is as beautiful as people say it is, and views across the Andes which previously I could never have imagined existed.”

Waldeck’s Founder Paul Waldeck added: “Rebecca has done extremely well raising the funds needed to cover the cost of the expedition and completing what must have been a hugely rewarding yet physically challenging adventure.

“We were only too pleased to support her efforts and by the sounds of it this has been a life- changing experience for both Rebecca and the Peruvian communities she helped along the way.”
