Work has started on the construction of a new fire station in Cambourne, Cambridgeshire , the first facility of its kind to be built in the county since 1987.

M.A.R.S (Construction) Ltd, based in Cambridgeshire, and consulting engineering firm Waldeck, based in Peterborough, successfully bid for the design and build contract worth £1.1 million.

Waldeck, which has offices throughout the East of England, was appointed by M.A.R.S to undertake the civil and structural design work on the project in accordance with the fire service’s outline brief.Waldeck’s Associate Director Paul Housego said: “We’re delighted to have been employed by M.A.R.S as the civil and structural consultancy team on this project.

“The fire station will be of great benefit to the people of Cambourne and is being built in such a way that it can be developed further when the need arises in the future.”Waldeck has forged a successful business relationship with M.A.R.S by delivering commercially astute designs and this is one of a number of construction projects we’re working on in partnership with M.A.R.S. in Cambridgeshire.”

Mark Pettitt Senior Director from M.A.R.S added: “We are exceptionally pleased to have secured this project and to be working with Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service to deliver this valuable and strategically important facility.”We are working alongside our design partners Waldeck and continuing this alliance to deliver another design and build project utilising our combined strengths.”

The new fire station, located on land to the south of Back Lane in Cambourne, is expected to be completed in April 2011 and will service the growing communities in the three villages of Great Cambourne, Lower Cambourne and Upper Cambourne.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service was allocated the land as part of an agreement between Cambridgeshire County Council and MCA Developments in 1994.

It was given the site free of charge and also received a total of £558,000 towards the cost of building a new fire station.

The station will primarily be used as a base for the South Cambridgeshire district team which specialises in giving fire safety advice and as a community facility with meeting space for local residents and groups.
