Waldeck, beating the recession with phenomenal growth

Posted on October 7th, 2010 by admin

Three core beliefs provide the structure around which Waldeck is built: creativity, passion and commercial acumen.

That is why this structural engineering and sustainable design company, which started life as a small family firm consisting of just two people, has grown into the large, expansive business it is today.

Waldeck was created by founder Paul Waldeck in 1995, with only Paul and his wife then being employed by the company.

The last 15 years has seen Waldeck mushroom into a business which today employs almost 70 professionals, including chartered engineers and design technicians.

“Although our industry was one of the hardest hit by the recession, we managed to double in size during that time,” said Paul.

“In fact, around half our total growth happened during the last recession.”

Waldeck’s growth over the last 15 years has been phenomenal.

“Although our HQ is based in Sleaford, we now operate in Lincoln, Peterborough, Hull and Northampton, plus we acquired the name of the oldest firm of professional engineers in Nottingham, Elliot & Brown.

“And we are now working with companies all over the country, as far as Aberdeen in the north and Plymouth in the south.

“However our roots are very much based in Lincolnshire,” said Paul.

Waldeck has built up a list of achievements that is the envy of many similar companies in the industry.

“We won a prestigious contract to provide design support services for EDF Energy’s new £600m combined cycle gas turbine station at West Burton,” said Paul.

The highly efficient power station is the first to be constructed in the UK by EDF Energy and is due to be ready for commercial operation in 2011. It is claimed to make a “significant contribution” to meeting the UK’s future energy demand while helping to cut carbon dioxide emissions.

“It is fantastic that EDF are investing and employing local British companies with this project. Working with EDF in the expanding energy sector presents tremendous opportunities and prospects for our business as we move forward,” he said.

An essential ingredient of Waldeck’s success is its focus on the needs of its customers.

“We look after our customers, and never let them down,” said Paul.

“While our competitors struggle in this recession we are succeeding. I believe this is because of our commitment to our clients and the quality of the people who work for us.”

“We are competitive on price, but my mantra in the quest for continuing success is “good people, good people, GOOD PEOPLE!” he said.

Waldeck has just been appointed to help with the design of the largest distribution centre in Europe for an online retailer, and the firm has also just joined ProHelp, a group which specialists in providing services for free locally to good causes.

“My ambition over the next few years is to continue growth through these financially dark times, to look after our customers and to provide the right services to people.

“I hope to consolidate and strengthen current investments, look for growth across the Midlands and become further recognised nationally.

“Every day is a challenge in business, but these challenges provide us with new opportunities,” said Paul.

It is this philosophy that has seen his business go from strength to strength, and it is this philosophy that will see his company continue to do so.
